During the war, Lingfords adopted a destroyer, HMS Tartar. with three others - Mr Stott, Audrey Binks and Vera Headley - I went to Devonport for the ceremony. We had a great weekend. Us ladiesgot a handbag and some soap [this was good as nice soap was hard to get]. HMS Tartar also gave us the bell from a German ship thcyhad sunk. This hung in Lingfords until it closed.
