Barclays Bank was palatial with very elaborate ceiling and highly polished, double-width counter to avoid theft.

But in the office behind, the Junior clerk stood at a high desk all day and wore an overall to avoid her clothes wearing out round the middle.
At the end of the day she had to wait for the Manager to finish writing letters in longhand then dash to the post office to catch the 6.30 collection.
Opening hours were only 10am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. And no cash machines in those days.
