I first visited in 1969 and it was a vibrant market town with lots of interesting shops, such as McIntyre, Doggarts, Finlay's the jewellers, Wilkinsons, Chittocks and so on. It was a pleasure walking down Newgate Street as it was generally very busy and full of all kinds of folk going about their day to day business. The market was thriving and very big, with lots of bargains to be had. The Odeon Cinema was wonderful and I saw many great films there. Such a shame there is no cinema in Bishop Auckland. Having married someone from Bishop Auckland and worked at Cockton Hill Infants' School for thirty years, I have a great love for the town and hope to see all the developments and benefits connected to Auckland Castle Trust.
